Stephen Rey

ACTOR

Stephen Rey is an American musician, artist, actor, model, songwriter, and a troubadour of sorts whose music has appeared in films and documentaries. At age 17 he learned the art of hitchhiking and busking in the streets of San Francisco before doing a brief stint at San Diego State University and learning the construction trade.

Rey primarily attributes his musical influence to his childhood in El Centro, an agricultural city situated in the Imperial Valley of California, where he discovered 50’s rock ‘n roll, blues, jazz, country music, and a long lasting affinity for old Mexican love songs. He carries a torch and passion for those things that are slowly disappearing in our American culture. These changes are characterized in his composition, “The Old Fashioned Future.”

Throughout his musical career Rey has written and composed hundreds of songs. His songs dangerously tight rope honky tonk, border town barrel house country blues, and at times unpredictable rock & roll with a southern swamp. Rey has performed with countless musicians and opened for bands from all over the world, including Dale Watson, BRMC, Jewel, The Blasters, Hank Williams III and The Dirt Bombs.

Most often Rey performs with his acoustic guitar; however, he has also been featured as the bass player for bands around the country. Currently, Rey is featured with Cash’d Out, a Johnny Cash tribute band, with a 2016 tour schedule performing in over 100 cities coast to coast throughout the US.

The amorphous musical giant known as The Grasshopper Lies Heavy defy typical categorization. The band has released 8 records in 6 years, each exploring varying musical territories while maintaining a common thread: crushingly heavy, wall-of-sound music; sometimes melodic, sometimes atonal, speaker shredding, enigmatic, and emotive.

James created the original soundtrack and soundscape for Cavern in collaboration with Bob Dog Catlin from Doghouse Audio Laboratory.
